When Battery Service is Necessary

If you have experienced either of the scenarios above or any number of other circumstances that are similar, you have probably also heard from someone “It’s your battery” or “It’s your alternator”, but what is the problem? You can find out for sure when you bring your vehicle into Victory Hyundai at The Legends for a diagnostic. The technicians in our Service Center can run a computer diagnostic to learn what is keeping your vehicle from starting and correct the problem.

What’s Wrong with My Car?

If you are having trouble starting your vehicle, it is likely one of the following problems with your ignition and starting system or your battery.

  • You have a healthy battery, but it is drained: This is the best possible problem, because it usually means that you left your lights on or a door slightly ajar and the dome light stayed on, causing the battery to discharge. In this case, a jump start will usually get you on your way.
  • Your battery is old and can no longer keep a charge: This problem’s solution is to buy a new battery.
  • Your starting system is failing: This means there is a component in the system that is not working properly and needs to be addressed.

What If It Isn’t the Battery?

If your battery is healthy and fully charged and your vehicle still won’t start, you can look at problems with the starter, the alternator, spark plugs, fuses, or the ignition switch. Other actions you can take to help with starting problems include cleaning the terminals and connectors. If they are dirty and corroded, it can prevent the electrical spark from getting through to start the engine. Having your battery tested when you have problems with your vehicle starting is the first and best step to rule out battery issues as the culprit. This can only be done with a voltmeter and if you don’t have one, have your technicians at Victory Hyundai at The Legends test your battery. They will let you know if the battery is nearing the end of its life or if it isn’t the problem.
