Hyundai Hope on Wheels Donates $100k to Children’s Mercy Hospital

CMH KC received a $100,000 donation last year from Hyundai Hope on Wheels. The funds come from an impact grant, which is awarded to pediatric oncology departments to support research for a cure for childhood cancer. The organization has been giving money to this cause for 26 years. Their goal for 2024 is to give away $26 million to hospitals that are dedicated to treating pediatric cancer.
Along with the check presentation, part of the celebration at CMH KC includes children putting their handprints on a vehicle that will be driven around the country. The bright red, blue, yellow, and green prints draw attention to the vehicle, which provides more opportunities to bring awareness to pediatric cancer.
Pediatric cancer research doesn’t receive the funding that research for adult cancer does because the trials are seldom supported by pharmaceutical companies. Instances of pediatric cancer are much rarer than in adults. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Hyundai Hope on Wheels has been involved in fighting these diseases since 1998. Since the beginning, the organization has raised over $250 million.

The organization provides support to children, their families, and medical and research teams involved in childhood cancer. National Youth Ambassadors are elected for a two-year term to bring attention to the disease. The ambassadors share their cancer story to help others.
For 2024, Hyundai Hope on Wheels awarded 27 hospitals the Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant, which is a two-year research award for $400,000. The Hyundai Young Investigators Grant is a $250,000 award given to 14 facilities. The $100,000 award went to 50 institutions in 2024.
The awards have several different purposes. The Scholar Hope Grants go to researchers who are working on expanding treatment options and improving the quality of life for those diagnosed with cancer. The Young Investigator Grant provides funding for researchers who are working on better understanding childhood cancer through clinical or laboratory research. The Impact Grant, which CMH KC received, goes to provide much-needed funding for innovative research or support patient assistance programs, on-site support for families, and more.
