Hyundai Scores Top Spot in 2024 IIHS Awards

Each year, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluates vehicles on their safety standards and makes determinations on which picks meet the highest evaluation standards for safety. In 2024, some of the criteria were improved to rate vehicles for a greater level of safety. The new standards paint a vivid picture that the average person wants a vehicle that is safer under a variety of circumstances.

Hyundai won nine IIHS awards with the most TSP and TSP + titles of any automotive manufacturer. Hyundai Automotive Group has more wins than any other auto maker in the annual assessment comprising 21 % of the total 2024 awards. Hyundai beat out Genesis, Honda and Mazda. For Hyundai motors, the TSP + winners included the IONIQ 5, KONA, and TUCSON, and IONIQ 6. The TSP winners include the ELANTRA, SONATA, PALISADE, SANTA FE and SANTA CRUZ. Winning the Awards

To be eligible for an IIHS TSP award, vehicles must secure a Good rating in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. For the higher TSP + award, vehicles must earn Good ratings in the small overlap front, updated side tests, and at least an Acceptable rating in the updated moderate front crash test. Both TSP/TSP+ awards require an Acceptable of Good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and headlights, which must be equipped on all trim levels.

In 2024, IIHS elevated its standards for TSP/TSP+ standards, urging auto makers to improve rear-seat protection for passengers and to also improve safety standards for pedestrian crash avoidance systems. The updated moderate front overlap test from IIHS now features a second crash test dummy positioned behind the driver to emphasize rear-seat safety and has superseded the original evaluation from the 2024 TSP + criteria.
